Jennifer Keeney is the Affiliate Artist of Flute at the University of Houston, Moores School of Music. Her teaching and playing reflect her joyful, creative and dynamic approach to music. Ms. Keeney uses these strengths to create a vibrant, supportive flute community here at the Moores School of Music and wherever she is teaching and performing.
Currently the Second Flutist with the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra, and a founding member of Trio Angelico, Flute (Jennifer Keeney), Mezzo Soprano ( Sonja Bruzauskas) and Piano (Anita Kruse). She performs as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Houston, the United States and Japan. This year Ms. Keeney will perform on the Rothko Chapel Series, Villa Maria Song Salon Series, the Segner Series, ROCO Upstairs, The University of Houston, as well as concerts in Michigan, Maine, Colorado, Louisiana and in Japan.After being named as a flutist in the New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas, Ms. Keeney was appointed as the Principal Flutist of the Hong Kong Philharmonic. She has performed with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Ann Arbor Symphony, Flint Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and Houston Grand Opera, among others.Ms. Keeney is known as a caring, inspirational, and informative teacher. This year she will give master classes at The University of Texas, Rice University, Colorado University (Boulder), Texas Tech University, Bowling Green University, and The High School for the Visual and Performing Arts in Houston. Her community service includes the Purple Songs Can Fly Project, The Music and Arts program at Texas Childrens Hospital, assisted care homes and the Young Audiences of Houston.Having taught at the Interlochen National Music Camp, University of Michigan Division, for five years and at the Bowling Green University Summer Flute Camp, she is now on the Flute Faculty of Floot Fire, at the University of Houston and The Panoramic Flutist with Christina Jennings and Leone Buyse. Ms. Keeney continues to give her annual week long Creative Flutist Classes in Houston and Austin, Texas. She enjoys performing in a variety of Summer Music Festivals such as The Pacific Music Festival ( Japan), The Colorado Music Festival, Mainely Music and The Interlochen Music Festival.She is the author of Creative Practice Recipes Set 1 & 2 and the flute pedagogy book, The Creative Flutist. Creative Practice Recipes are an informative, innovative, inspirational set of Flute Flash Cards teaching tools for flutists, teachers and other musicians. Each Set contains six Cards each on Preparation, Tone, Technique, Creative Ideas, Music & Performance. There will be a total of 5 Set's, one being published each year. In 2009,Trio Angelico and her new flute & piano CD, Fluting, will be released.Ms. Keeney received her education from The University of Michigan (B.M. in Flute Performance), Royal Northern College of Music in England (Post Graduate Work), University of Southern California and The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University (M. M. of Flute Performance). Her principal teachers include Leone Buyse, Jim Walker, Walfrid Kujala, Trevor Wye, Judith Bentley and Clemente Barone. She has had lessons with and performed in Master Classes for; Julius Baker, Jean Pierre Rampal, Jeanne Baxtresser, James Galway, William Bennett, Paula Robison and Carol Wincenc.
